Day 14: Pedaling Along the Beach

Route:  Beverly Beach to Honeyman state park
Distance:  63.9 miles
Total Trip Distance:  813 miles

Today was all about the beach.  Seems like a every time I looked to the right, there was the beach.  Nice.  Of course this meant passing through lots of little beach towns with restaurants, candy shops, souvenir shops and bead shops.  Yeah, bead shops.  I'm guessing that's all they sell?  Must be one hell of a market for beads for every little town to have a shop dedicated to this single commodity.  But I digress.....

Here are some beach pictures!

Newport:

Bridge out of Newport:

Note:  on bridges and tunnels you have to pedal like mad, because you are generally in the traffic lane and cranky tourists can be none to keen on waiting an extra 5 seconds to cross the bridge- they have beads to buy dammit!  Tunnels have the added fun of pushing a button before you enter which actives some flashing lights to "warn" motorists you are in there (or for "Grand Theft Auto" officionados, it's alerts them that a new target is inside).

Actually, the folks on the road have been 99.9% cool.  Nice work motorists - keep it up!

A great spot for a PB  and honey sandwich:

Now it's getting better:

And higher:

Saw 2 otters in the surf here:

Right before Heceta Head:

Stocked up on groceries in Florence and then boogied on over to camp at Honeyman state park.  It's on/near some dunes and is quite popular with people who love sand (and machines that rip through the sand at high speeds) and loud vehicles that they rumble around in and wave at each other from.  So if this appeals to you - come here and join your tribe.  Bring lots of gas.

Hey, they all can't be perfect campgrounds!  Still, a sweet spot for my tent

And I found this book tucked up in a tree right behind my tent (hidden):

And my beer selection for tonight is quite tasty:

Even an average day on this route is pretty darn good!

  1. The more you get away from traveling by car, the more ridiculous touristy attractions become. :) Beeds? Er...

Love the little treasure you found in the tree! Have you noticed the occasional messages that other travelers have scribbled on the back of the signs on the sides of the road? They are usually only legible to those traveling close enough to the signs to see the tiny print and at slow enough a pace to read the entire message. Ah, let the treasure hunt begin!

  2. I HAVE noticed those messages - there was one written on the road of a steep climb that said "just breathe- it will be fine" :)
